Press Release- Superintendent Dr. Wilco Tymensen Announces Retirement
(TABER) On November 26, 2024, Dr. Wilco Tymensen, Superintendent of Schools for Horizon School Division announced his retirement effective July 31, 2025 after 31 years of education service. Wilco started his teaching career in the 1994/95 school year and worked for the Palliser School Division and Holy Spirit School Division prior to joining Horizon in 1997.

Dr. Tymensen has been a teacher, principal, director, associate superintendent and became the Superintendent of Horizon School Division in 2013. Wilco is one of the most senior educational system leaders in Alberta and has demonstrated a steadfast dedication to the students in Horizon and throughout the province through dedicated service within and outside his jurisdiction. Recognized as a mentor for others within the teaching profession, he has honed his strong academic and experiential background as a system education leader to support others relying upon educational supports. As Board Chair, Marie Logan has noted, “Wilco is often approached by colleagues across the province for his opinion and insight into areas such as curriculum, assessment, policy, personnel management, and leadership. He has been recognized provincially and nationally for outstanding school system leadership, exemplary leadership ability, and having enhanced the profession of school system administration over the course of his career.”

Dr. Tymensen’s impact on education within Horizon and Alberta is significant. Not only has his leadership within the Horizon School Division contributed to a legacy of strong accountability pillar results, but he has also impacted the efforts of other interest groups such as the College of Alberta School Superintendents (CASS) where he served on the Provincial Executive from 2011 – 2014 and on the CASS Board of Directors from 2019 – 2024 which included service as CASS President in 2021 – 2022.

As the Board of Trustees prepares for an extensive search for a new Superintendent the Board congratulates Dr. Wilco Tymensen for his extensive efforts to enhance in the public’s interest, the quality of system education leadership in Horizon and our province.
