Student Transportation Request Forms
If you are requesting that your child/children receive transportation to their Designated School (within their designated attendance boundary based on your home address) you should complete a student transportation request form. This form may also be re-submitted if any of your emergency contact or address information happens to change.
Please Note: That it may take up to 48 hours to arrange bus services and children should not ride the bus until the request has been approved and a bus driver has made contact with you.
If you are requesting that your child/children receive transportation to a Non-Designated School (which is outside of their approved attendance boundary) you will also need to review policy IC – School Attendance Areas and complete the attached Non-Designated Placement Request and Transportation Request forms (in addition to the Transportation Request Form listed above).
It is also very important to note the following:
- Currently the province of Alberta provides funding for school bus transportation, subject to certain conditions. Funding is provided for transportation to a student’s designated school, and only for distances greater than 2.4 kilometers.
- Students whose residence is less than 2.4 km from their designated school are not funded for transportation unless there are special needs.
- Students may attend a school of choice, but the province only funds transportation to the designated school if the place of residence is greater than 2.4 km.
- School bus transportation is only guaranteed for students attending their designated school and residing 2.4 km or greater from that school.
- Non-Designated applications are approved on a yearly basis and are subject to criteria listed on the Non-Designated Transportation Application Form.
- If a student is approved for transportation to a non-designated school, re-application must be made each year.
Please Note: That it may take 48-72 hours to review this type of bussing request. Children should not ride the bus until the request has been approved and a bus driver has made contact with you.
School Attendance Boundaries
More information and maps will be coming soon. If you have questions regarding what your child’s designated school is please contact Horizon’s Transportation Coordinator.
Weather and Road Conditions
Because Horizon is so large geographically, weather and road conditions may be very different within different towns and school attendance areas. Detailed and up-to-date weather information may be found at:
Inclement Weather Procedures
In the event of adverse weather or road conditions, your bus could be delayed. If the delay will be any greater than 10-15 minutes, First Student will attempt to contact parents by phone. However, if the delay is less than that, you will have to watch for the bus and no calls will be made.
Information on cancellations or delays may also be found by clicking on the “ON TIME” icon in the top right hand corner of the Horizon School Division website (www.horizon.ab.ca).
Bus Cancellations and School Closures:
Also, in the event of adverse weather or road conditions, there may be certain routes within a geographic region or all routes within a geographic region that may be cancelled. These decisions are made in collaboration between bus drivers/road checkers, First Student Administration, and Horizon School Division.
If individual bus routes are cancelled, parents will be contacted by their bus driver.
If schools are closed in the geographic area, bus drivers do not contact individual families, parents will need to:
Check the Horizon School Division No. 67 Website - www.horizon.ab.ca as it will have the most up-to-date information clearly communicated by geographic area and school
Listen to the following Radio Stations as they will announce any cancellations – The River 107.7 FM, Rock 106.7 FM, Country 95.5 FM, B93.3 FM, CKBD 98.1, CJOC 94.1 FM

Student Misconduct Procedures
To ensure the safety of all persons on the bus, students are expected to conduct themselves in an acceptable manner, to obey the rules of the bus, and to obey the directions of their bus driver. Drivers will file a misconduct report on any student behavior which is disruptive to the safe operation of the bus. Parents will be contacted by their bus driver when a misconduct report has been submitted regarding their child’s behavior. Following that, the Horizon Transportation Coordinator will work with the school Principal to determine and document a suitable course of action.
A bus misconduct may lead to suspension, and/or termination of busing privileges. Parents are asked to support their child’s bus driver in teaching students acceptable modes of conduct on the school bus.
